Foundation of the Kingdoms in Exile.
Arnor, the Northern Kingdom, is established in Eriador. It is ruled directly by Elendil. Its capital city is Annuminas.
Gondor, the Southern Kingdom, is established further south, around the mouth of the Anduin. It is ruled jointly by Elendil's sons Isildur and Anárion. Its capital city is Osgiliath.[1]
Isildur plants a seedling of the White Tree in Minas Ithil.
The seven palantíri are divided. Three in Arnor: in Annuminas, the Tower of Amon Sûl, and the tower Elostirion upon the Emyn Beraid. And four in Gondor: the Master-Stone in Osgiliath, and lesser Stones in Minas Anor, Minas Ithil, and Angrenost.
Sauron returns to Mordor.
3339 Birth of Aratan, second son of Isildur. He was born in Gondor.
3379 Birth of Ciryon, third son of Isildur. He was born in Minas Ithil.
3429-3441 The War of the Last Alliance.
Sauron attacks Gondor, takes Minas Ithil, and burns the White Tree (3429). Isildur escapes down the Anduin and sails to Elendil in the North. Anárion defends Osgiliath. Gil-galad and Elendil forge the Last Alliance of Elves and Men (3430). They march east to Imladris (3431). Their armies cross the Misty Mountains, defeat Sauron's forces at the Battle of Dagorlad, enter Mordor, and besiege the Barad-dûr (3434). Anárion slain (3440). Sauron comes forth and challenges Gil-galad and Elendil to combat. He is vanquished, but they perish in the deed (3441). Isildur takes the One Ring. End of the Second Age.
3430 Birth of Valandil, fourth son of Isildur, third High King of Arnor. He was born in Imladris.

Division of Arnor. With the death of Eärendur, owing to dissension among his sons, Arnor was divided into three smaller kingdoms: Arthedain, Cardolan, and Rhudaur. Amlaith, the eldest son of Eärendur, became the first king of Arthedain. Only the names of the kings of Arthedain are recorded.

933 Eärnil I captures Umbar, which becomes a fortress of Gondor.

c. 1000 Around this time the Sauron first entered Mirkwood and the Istari came to Middle-earth from the West.
These Istari (or Wizards) were three in number (the two Blue Wizards came to Middle-earth in the Second Age):
  1. Curunír, known in the North as Saruman the White, an incarnation of Curumo the Maia, a servant of Aulë;
  2. Mithrandir, known in the North as Gandalf the Grey, an incarnation of Olórin the Maia, a servant of Lórien and Nienna;
  3. Aiwendil, known in the North as Radagast the Brown, an incarnation of Aiwendil the Maia, a servant of Yavanna.
It seems that Curunír arrived first either accompanied by, or closely followed by, Aiwendil and that Mithrandir arrived last and alone. Upon his arrival in Middle-earth, Mithrandir was passed Narya, the Red Ring, by Círdan the Shipwright.

1050 Hyarmendacil I conquers the Harad and lifts the seige of Umbar.
The Harfoots (Periannath) enter Eriador.
c. 1100 The Wise discover that an evil power has made stronghold at Dol Guldor, they think it one of the Nazgûl.

1226 NARMACIL I, Seventeenth King of Gondor, b. TA 1049, d. TA 1294
He was the second childless king and was succeded by his brother Calmacil.
To rid himself of all cares, Narmacil he appointed his nephew Minalcar (son of Calmacil) to be Regent in TA 1240.
1248 Minalcar defeats the Easterlings and destroys their settlements east of the Sea of Rhûn.
1250 Minalcar sends his son, Valacar, as an ambassador to dwell with Vidugavia, King of Rhovanion. Valacar subsequently married Vidumavi, daughter of Vidugavia.
1272 MALVEGIL, Sixth King of Arthedain, b. TA 1144, d. TA 1349
1294 CALMACIL, Eighteenth King of Gondor, b. TA 1058, d. TA 1304
Minalcar, his son, continued as Regent throughout his reign.
c. 1300 The Lord of the Nazgûl moves north to Angmar, becoming its Witch-King.
Many Periannath migrate westward and settle at Bree.
1304 RÓMENDACIL II MINALCAR, Nineteenth King of Gondor, b. TA 1126, d. TA 1366
1349 ARGELEB I, Seventh King of Arthedain, b. TA 1226, d. TA 1356
Begining with Argeleb, the kings of Arthedain claimed dominion over all of Arnor and took names with the prefix Ar(a)- to symbolize such.
c. 1350 The Stoors flee the Angle, some recross the Misty Mountains and settle along the Gladden River.
1356 ARVELEG I, Eigth King of Arthedain, b. TA 1309, d. TA 1409
Argeleb I slain in battle with Rhudaur.
1366 VALACAR, Twentieth King of Gondor, b. TA 1194, d. TA 1432
1409 ARAPHOR, Ninth King of Arthedain, b. TA 1391, d. TA 1589
The Witch-king of Angmar invades Arnor, Arveleg I is slain. Cardolan and Rhudaur are overrun. The Tower of Amon Sûl is destroyed, but its palantír is saved and removed to Fornost.
1432 ELDACAR, Twenty-first King of Gondor, b. TA 1255, d. TA 1490
He was born in Rhovanion, his birth name was Vinitharya.
1432-1448 The Kin-strife of Gondor.
The Kingship of Eldacar is rejected by many of the people of Gondor. He is considered a half-breed as his mother was not of the Dúnedain and he was born in Rhovanion. Civil war breaks out upon his coronation (1432). After five years, the rebels, led by Castamir (a grandson of Calimehtar, brother of Rómendacil II Minalcar) beseige him in Osgiliath. The city is burnt and the master-palantír lost into the Anduin (1437). Eldcar flees to Rhovanion. Castamir declares himself the Twenty-second King. Ornendil son of Eldcar is executed. After ten years Eldacar raises an army and returns (1447). Eldacar slays Castamir. Castamir's sons flee to Pelargir, and from there (along with many other rebels) to Umbar.
1490 ALDAMIR, Twenth-third King of Gondor, b. TA 1330, d. TA 1540
He was the second son of Eldacar.
1540 HYARMENDACIL II VINYARION, Twenty-fourth King of Gondor, b. TA 1391, d. TA 1621
Aldamir is slain in battle with the Haradrim and the Corsairs of Umbar.
1589 ARGELEB II, Tenth King of Arthedain, b. TA 1473, d. TA 1670
1551 Hyarmendacil II defeats the Haradrim.
1601 Foundation of the Shire.
Argeleb II grants lands west of the Baranduin to the Periannath. Many of them (led by the Fallohide brothers, Marcho and Blanco) migrate west from Bree to settle those lands, which they called the Shire.
1621 MINARDIL, Twenty-fifth King of Gondor, b. TA 1454, d. TA 1634[2]
The Seward of Gondor during the reigns of Kings Minardil and Telemnar was Húrin, from whom all later Stewards were descended.
c. 1630 Stoors from Dunland migrate north to the Shire.
1634 TELEMNAR, Twenty-sixth King of Gondor, b. TA 1516, d. TA 1636
Minardil is slain when the Corsairs of Umbar, led by Angomaitë and Sangahyando (great-grandsons of Castamir) ravage Pelargir. Upon taking the throne, Telemnar immediately begins fitting out a fleet to destroy Umbar - but the Plague ends his plans.
1636 TARONDOR, Twenty-seventh King of Gondor, b. TA 1577, d. TA 1798
The Great Plague.
The Plague began in Rhovanion in the winter of 1635. Half the people and horses of Rhovanion perished.
 In Gondor, many people perish, especially in the cities. Calenardhon is significantly depopulated. Telemnar and all his children die. He was succeded by his nephew Tarondor, the son of Minastan, the second son of Minardil. The White Tree dies in Minas Anor.
 The Plague desolates much of Eriador, although its effects lessened as it moved north-west. Even so, the Shire Periannath suffer great loss.
1640 Tarondor moves the King's House from Osgiliath to Minas Anor, and plants a seedling of the White Tree. Osgiliath begins to fall into ruin. The guarding of Mordor ends.

1731 Birth of Durin VI, King of Durin's Folk, King of Moria, d. TA 1980
1743 ARVELEG II, Twelfth King of Arthedain, b. TA 1633, d. TA 1813
1798 TELUMEHTAR UMBARDACIL, Twenty-eighth King of Gondor, b. TA 1632, d. TA 1850
1810 Telumehtar retakes Umbar, and drives out the Corsairs.
1813 ARAVAL, Thirteenth King of Arthedain, b. TA 1711, d. TA 1891
1850 NARMACIL II, Twenty-ninth King of Gondor, b. TA 1684, d. TA 1856
1851 With assistance from Lindon and Imladris, Araval of Arthedain defeats Angmar. He seeks to reoccupy northern Cardolan, but evil wights terrify all who seek to dwell near.
The attacks on Gondor by the Wainriders begin.
1856 CALIMEHTAR, Thirtieth King of Gondor, b. TA 1736, d. TA 1936
The Battle of the Plains. Narmacil II leads an army north and meets the the Wainriders in battle on the plains south of Mirkwood. With him is an army of Northmen of Rhovanion led by Marhari (a descendant of Vidugavia). Narmacil is defeated, both he and Marhari fall. Gondor loses its eastern territories.
Eastern and southern Rhovanion are enslaved by the Wainriders. Some Northmen flee north and merge with the people of Dale. Others, led by Marhwini (son of Marhari), settled in the Vale of the Anduin between the Carrock and the Gladden - this is the begining of the Éothéod.
The Nazgûl re-enter Morder.
1879 Birth of Pelendur, Steward to King Ondoher of Gondor (d. TA 1998).
1891 ARAPHANT, Fourteenth King of Arthedain, b. TA 1789, d. TA 1964
1899 Calimehtar defeats the Wainriders on the Dagorlad.
1900 Calimehtar builds the White Tower in Minas Anor.
1936 ONDOHER, Thirty-first King of Gondor, b. TA 1787, d. TA 1944
He had two sons, Artamir and Faramir, and a daughter, Fíriel.
The Seward of Gondor during the reigns of Kings Ondoher and Eärnil II was Pelendur.
1940 Arnor and Gondor renew communication and forge an alliance. Arvedui, heir to the throne of Arthedain, marries Fíriel, daughter of King Ondoher of Gondor.
1944 The Wainriders reappear and attack Gondor in great numbers, they forge an alliance with men from Khand and the Near Harad. Gondor is thus assailed from the north and the south. Ondoher and both his sons fall in battle north of Morannon. The Wainriders pour into North Ithilien.
However, Eärnil, Captain of the Southern Army defeats the southern invaders in South Ithilien. He turns north, gathers up the remnants of the Nothern Army, and destroys the Wainriders camped in North Ithilien.
Arvedui claims the throne of Gondor.
1945 EÄRNIL II, Thirty-second King of Gondor, b. TA 1883, d. TA 2043
Arvedui's claim is rejected and the crown is given to Eärnil (son of Siriondil, son of Calimmacil, son of Arciryas, brother of Narmacil II).
1950 Birth of Imrazôr, father of Galador, first Prince of Dol Amroth.
1964 ARVEDUI, Fifteenth King of Arthedain, b. TA 1864, d. TA 1975
1974-1975 The End of the Northern Kingdom.
The Witch-king overruns Arthedain and takes Fornost (1974). Arvedui is shipwrecked in the Bay of Forochel, the palantíri of Annúminas and Amon Sûl are lost with him. Eärnur, son of King Eärnil of Gondor, brings a fleet to Lindon. The Witch-King is defeated in the Battle of Fornost, and is pursued to the Ettenmoors. He vanishes from the North (1975).
1976 ARANARTH, First Chieftan of the Dúnedain of the North, b. TA 1938, d. TA 2106
Aranarth, son of Arvedui, takes the title Chieftan of the Dúnedain of the North. The heirlooms of Arnor are given to Elrond for safe-keeping.
1977 Frumgar leads the Éothéod north to the region around the source of the Anduin.
1979 Bucca of the Marish, First Thain of the Shire.
1980 Náin I, King of Durin's Folk, King of Moria, b. TA 1832, d. TA 1981.
The Dwarves awaken a Balrog in Moria, it slays Durin VI.
The Witch-king enters Mordor and gathers the Nazgûl.
1981 Thráin I, King of Durin's Folk, King Under the Mountain, b. TA 1934, d. TA 2190.[3]
The Dwarves flee Moria after the Balrog slays Náin I.
Many Elves flee Lórien. Amroth, King of Lórien, is lost at sea.
 Mithrellas, a companion of Nimrodel (the beloved of Amroth) is lost in the woods of Belfalas and is taken in by Imrazôr, a Dúnadan of the area. They wed, and Mithrellas bears a son (Galador) and a daughter (Gilmith). After a few years Mithrellas vanishes.
1998 Vorondil, Steward of Gondor, b. TA 1919, d. TA 2029
1999 Thráin I moves to Erebor and founds the Kingdom under the Mountain.
2000-2002 Fall of Minas Ithil.
The Nazgûl issue for Mordor and beseige it (2000). Minas Ithil falls, and its palantír is captured (2002). Henceforth it is known as Minas Morgul.
2043 EÄRNUR, Thirty-third King of Gondor, b. TA 1928, missing TA 2050
He is challenged by the Witch-king to single combat. He renames Minas Anor to Minas Tirith.

Eärnur rides to Minas Morgul to accept the challenge of the Witch-king, he does not return. As no undisputed claimant to the throne can be found, the Stewards took the rule of Gondor.
2063 Mithrandir goes to Dol Guldor, Sauron retreats into the East.

Around this time Déagol the Stoor retrieves the One Ring from the water at the Gladden Fields. He is promptly murdered by Sméagol, who takes the Ring. Sméagol is later given the name Gollum.
c. 2470 Gollum moves to the Misty Mountains.
2475 Orcs from Mordor attack Ithilien and capture Osgiliath. Boromir, son of Denethor I, defeats them and drives them from Ithilien. Osgiliath is ruined and its bridge broken.
2477 BOROMIR, Eleventh Ruling Steward of Gondor, b. TA 2410, d. TA 2489
c. 2480 Orcs begin to make stongholds in the Misty Mountains and Sauron begins to populate Moria with his own creatures.

2747 The Battle of Green Fields. Bandobras Took defeats on Orc-band that invades the Shire from the North.
2758-2759 The Long Winter. Gondor is attacked by fleets of the Corsairs of Umbar, some land as far north as the mouth of the Angren (2758). Rohan is attacked from the east and the west (2758). From the east by Easterlings. From the west by the Dunlendings, led by Wulf and assisted by the Corsairs. Helm retreats to Aglarond and is beseiged. Edoras falls to the Dunlendings and Wulf declares himself King. Helm's son Haleth falls defending Edoras. Helm perishes at Aglarond. The winter breaks (2759). Fréaláf (son of Hild, Helm's sister) regains Edoras and kills Wulf. Gondor sends aid to Rohan by the roads both east and west of the Ered Nimrais. The Easterlings and the Dunlendings are driven out (even from Angrenost).
 Due to the winter, there is great loss of life among the Shire Periannath, Mithrandir comes to their aid.

Curunír receives the keys of Orthanc from Steward Beren of Gondor. He attends the coronation of Fréaláf, and soon after takes up residence in Angrenost.

The Quest of Erebor. Thorin II and thirteen companions (including Bilbo Baggins), guided by Mithrandir, set out for Erebor. In the west of Eriador they find the ancient swords Glamdring and Orcrist. Mithrandir takes Glamdring, and Thorin Orcrist. While crossing the Misty Mountains they are attacked and seperated. Bilbo Baggins flees into the depths and there finds the One Ring (which had abandoned Gollum). Bilbo meets Gollum, but escapes with the Ring. Reunited, the Quest reaches Erebor and arouses Smaug - who attacks Esgaroth and is shot by Bard (heir of Girion, Lord of Dale). Thorin II delares himself King Under the Mountain. Thranduil and Bard march to the gates of Erebor to seek a share of the treasure. Thorin sends to the Iron Hills for reinforcements from his kinsman Dáin Ironfoot. Bolg, son of Azog, leads an orkish host down from the Misty Mountains. The Battle of the Five Armies. Thorin II falls, as do his sister-sons Fíli and Kíli. Bolg is slain by Beorn. Thorin, who died childless, is succeded by Dáin.
The White Council attack Dol Guldor. Sauron, as long planned, abandons it and removes to Mordor.
2943 Thengel of Rohan marries Morwen of Lossarnach.
In Gondor, she bares him two daughters and a son, Théoden.

The last meeting of the White Council, Curunír claims to have discovered that the One Ring has rolled down the Anduin to the Sea. He begins to keep agents in Bree and the Shire.
2954 Orodruin bursts into flame. The last inhabitants of Ithilien flee over the Anduin.
2957-2980 Aragorn II travels widely and, as "Thorongil", serves both Thengel of Rohan and Steward Ecthelion II of Gondor.

Notes:

  1. Isildur and Anárion were brothers and joinly ruled Gondor. However, they were under the authority of their father, Elendil, in the North. Thus Arnor and Gondor were legally one United High-Kingdom. As far as Gondor was concerned this Union ended with the death of Isildur. The response of the Council of Gondor to Arvedui's claim on the throne makes clear they believed that Isildur relinquished the kingship of Gondor to Meneldil. Arvedui disagreed, claiming it was never intended that the realm of Elendil should be divided.
    Whatever the case legally, in practice the two Kingdoms were divided at the death of Isildur. As it is unlikely that Meneldil, the Númenórean born son of Anárion, would have considered Valandil, his Middle-earth born and very much younger cousin, to have any authority over him.
  2. There is an error in LotR App. A with regard to Minardil, under Section (iv) "Gondor and the Heirs of Anárion" he is described as the son of Eldacar. Whereas the King list in Section (ii) "The Realms in Exile: The Southern Line: Heirs of Anárion" lists him as the great-grandson of Eldacar. This is confirmed by HoMe XII:199.
  3. I have described the Kings of Durin's Folk as Kings Under the Mountain even if they only ruled Erebor for part of their reign.
  4. It is not actually recorded when Galador was appointed Prince of Dol Amroth. But it must have been before TA 2050 ,because HoMe XII:222 states that the Principality had come into being before "the ending of the Kings." For present purposes I have assumed he was appointed when he 'came of age' at 20 years. Of course it may have been later.
  5. This date is according to The Tale of the Years (LotR App. B). Although it may have been later, as the LotR Prologue says that Tobold first grew pipe-weed during the reign of Thain Isengrim II.
  6. The Tale of the Years (LotR App. B) actually just says that Isengrim II was the tenth Thain, but the family tree of the Tooks of Geat Smials (LotR App. C) makes clear it means the tenth of the Took line.
  7. Eldarion's death date (c. FA 220) is taken from HoMe XII:410 where Tolkien says that the "... end of the reign of Eldarion [was] about 100 years after the death of Aragorn." The birth date (c. FA 20) is an estimate based on the assumption that Eldarion lived around 200 years. In addition, it has been speculated that the visit of Mayor Samwise and Rose to Gondor (FA 21) may have been prompted by news of the birth of the King's heir.
